Volkswagen immobiliser systems have moved a long way from the early Golf and Polo to the current Mk8, and the tooling needed at each end is completely different. One needs the module out on the bench; the other needs diagnostics on a proximity system.

We are set up for both, so an older VW is no more of a problem to us than a current one — and neither needs a dealership visit.

Older Volkswagen key systems we work on

Early VWs are where hardware-level immobiliser work comes in, alongside the familiar mechanical wear on the remote itself.

  • Pre-mid-2000s models including the Golf Mk4, Polo 9N and Passat B5 often cannot be programmed via standard OBD
  • On those cars the immobiliser module is removed and reprogrammed at hardware or EEPROM level
  • The remote flip key hinge is a frequently repaired point of failure across the Golf, Polo and Passat range

Current Volkswagen models we work on

The latest Golf relies on proximity keyless entry, and the reported problems there are intermittent rather than absolute.

  • The current Golf Mk8's KESSY proximity keyless system has documented reliability quirks
  • Owners report intermittent unlock and lock failures
  • There is a specific known fault with the door handle sensor in wet or winter conditions

What happens on the visit

We confirm the model year and immobiliser type first, because that decides whether the job is done through the diagnostic port or at module level. Keys are cut and coded on-site, old keys can be deleted where the system allows it, and everything is tested before we leave. Free quote before we arrive.

Common questions

Why can't my older Golf be programmed through the diagnostic port?
Pre-mid-2000s models such as the Golf Mk4, Polo 9N and Passat B5 often cannot be programmed via standard OBD. The immobiliser module has to be removed and reprogrammed at hardware or EEPROM level, which is bench work we carry out from the van.
The flip part of my VW key has broken — is that common?
Yes. The remote flip key hinge is a frequently repaired point of failure right across the Golf, Polo and Passat range. We repair or replace the key and keep your existing electronics paired to the car.
My Golf Mk8 sometimes won't unlock when I touch the handle.
The Mk8's KESSY proximity keyless system has documented reliability quirks, including intermittent unlock and lock failures reported by owners, and a specific known fault with the door handle sensor in wet or winter conditions. We check the sensor and the key together rather than replacing parts on a guess.
